(Continued from UNH Today home page.)
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Richard Highfield has accepted the appointment as Dean of the College of Business at the University of New Haven, effective mid-summer 2008.
Dr. Highfield joins UNH from St. John’s University, where he served for four years as Dean of the Peter J. Tobin College of Business and Professor of Economics and Finance. Other administrative appointments include four years as Dean of the School of Business at University at Albany, State University of New York, and six years as Associate Dean, MBA Program and Operations, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Dr. Highfield earned his Ph.D. in 1987 in Econometrics and Economics from the University of Chicago, an MBA in 1979 from Santa Clara University, and a BA in Economics in 1971 from Stanford University.
Selected from an exceptionally strong pool of candidates, Dr. Highfield will hold concurrently with his appointment as dean the rank of Professor of Economics in the College of Business. Through his administrative experience at Cornell, Albany, and St. John’s, Dr. Highfield has developed a record of success in all aspects of the role of a business dean in AACSB-accredited programs.
Special thanks go to the members of the search committee. Chaired by Dr. Allen Sack, the committee also included Charles Coleman, Dale Finn, Art Goon, Becky Johnson, Scott Lane, Mary Miller, and Armando Rodriguez.
Memorial Service April 7
To Honor Longtime UNH Professor

To the University Community:
You are invited to an on-campus memorial service for Dr. Caroline Dinegar Monday, April 7th at 2 p.m. in Dodds Theatre. Whether you knew Dr. Dinegar, a longtime University of New Haven professor who died December 12th after a courageous battle with cancer, or you never had the opportunity to interact with her, I highly recommend that you attend. Knowing what the University has lost is as integral to your understanding of this campus and what drives it, as is recognizing what the University has to offer.
Dr. Dinegar was something of a political celebrity here at the University. Her talents, nurtured as a student at Cornell, Columbia and Oxford, then honed as a Foreign Affairs officer and a liaison to the United States Mission to the United Nations in New York and Paris, served her well as a professor in institutions of higher education. She was an assistant professor of Political Science at the University of Connecticut, associate professor of International Law and Organization at Cal State Northridge and assistant professor in the Woodrow Wilson Department of Government at the University of Virginia before arriving at the University of New Haven. Her resume here was equally diverse. She served as assistant provost, was chair of the Department of Political Science, chaired the Faculty-Senate several times over the course of many years, served temporarily as acting director of the library, was interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and directed the School of Hospitality and Tourism. During her time at the University of New Haven, she also served as a director in the Peace Corps, and was professor of Strategy and Politics at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport. She even ran for mayor of New Haven, twice.
We were always proud of her service and her affiliation with the University of New Haven, and are committed to celebrating it. Campus minister Marty O’Connor will deliver an invocation, and students, faculty and staff will share remembrances of Dr. Dinegar. Please join us if you can and feel free to bring a memory.

FACULTY AND STAFF CAMPAIGN UPDATE
(Continued from UNH Today home page.)
To the University Community:
Once again I’m encouraged by the generosity of our community; I’m not surprised, though. I see evidence each day of the dedication of all of us. Especially I see the increased satisfaction level of the students. And that’s a tough group; I couldn’t imagine if today’s students saw UNH ten years ago!
I think when we’re involved in day-to-day operations, it’s hard to see the scope of the changes. I remember when I came here in 2001 (not that long ago), many office desks still had typewriters on them, and chalkboards were the extent of technology in the classrooms. Now to see the Smart Classrooms, the tremendous Beckerman Center, and the plans for the new dormitory and the Henry C. Lee Institute—it’s like a completely different school!
Except in a lot of ways it’s the same; UNH has retained its small-school feel, which makes us different from the average university. I feel more like part of a family here than part of an institution.
The Faculty and Staff Campaign is about giving a vote of confidence to the direction UNH is heading. A gift of any size shows that you believe—not that the University is perfect (what school is?), but that we’re moving in the right direction.
I believe. Do you?
