A Thank You to Fans, Who Figured Mightily in Women’s Basketball Win
(Continued from UNH Today home page.)

On behalf of the entire University of New Haven, we would like to thank the students, faculty, staff and fans who attended the nationally televised women's basketball win over Bridgeport on Saturday, February 2. More than 800 people helped us pack Charger Gymnasium and give our team a true home-court advantage. Everyone involved, from the TV crew to our staff to the student-athletes, commented on how the tremendous crowd impacted the game. Our fans were loud but respectful, cheering on the Chargers and helping us to foster a positive game environment for everyone.

We would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the planning and production of the game. As the NCAA Division II Game of the Week, CSTV broadcast the game nationally from Charger Gymnasium and the NCAA streamed the game via the Internet to the entire world. The NCAA staff and the TV production company commended us on our preparation and hard work in putting together the broadcast.

The planning for a television production of this magnitude takes the dedicated effort of many people on campus over a number of weeks. Special thanks go out to a number of UNH departments, including facilities, telecommunications, information technology, and public relations, as well as to the Fire Science Club, Charger Cheerleaders, Emanon, Chargers Pep Band, Undergraduate Student Government, Charger Bulletin, WNHU, Charger Cavalry, UNH sororities and Subway. To anyone who had anything to do with helping make this event such a huge success, a sincere thank you!

In lieu of admission for this game, we collected donations to benefit a local retired firefighter, Joseph Harvey, Jr. You helped us to raise more than $500 for Joe, who lost part of his leg to diabetes this fall and needs an expensive automatic chairlift installed in his home. This was truly a Community Engagement event, in a variety of ways.

Valery Levental’s paintings are part of the permanent collections of the Tretyakov Art Gallery in Moscow, the Russian Art Museum in St. Petersburg, and museums and private collections in the United States and Europe. Over the last 40 years, Valery’s remarkable scope of artistic expression and ability to mix powerful images of symbolism and realism have been the basis of some of the most vivid and memorable set and costume designs in the world. His work has been featured at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow—where he served as chief designer and his work remains an influence—La Scala (Milan), Komische Oper (Berlin), Royal Albert Hall (London), the Metropolitan Opera (New York), and the Mozart Festival in Salzburg, Austria. He serves as a member of the Russian Academy of Art and has been awarded honors for his achievements including the Russian State Prize and Stanislavsky Award.

The work of artist Katya Levental reflects classical Russian influences and her own unique set of life experiences. Raised in an artistic family in Moscow, she received her training and a nomination for the Gold Medal of the Academy of Art from the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow. An established artist, designer and decorative painter now residing in the United States, she founded The Painted Image, a company specializing in all aspects of design for interiors—from creation to implementation—and quickly established a demand for private and commercial commissions at an international level. Notable galleries in both the U.S. and Russia have exhibited her paintings, many of which are held in private collections in Paris, London, Moscow, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and New York. Her eclectic background includes work as an art director for multiple film and television productions in the U.S. and Russia, design of sets and costumes for the Christmas Celebration Performance at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow, and as a muralist with commissions including the United States Mint and IBM, among many others. (Continued from UNH Today home page.)

West Haven, Conn. -- The University of New Haven Softball team is hosting their second annual “Charger Homerun Breakfast,” a Faculty/Staff/Alumni breakfast fundraiser that will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 from 7:30-9:00 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge on the university campus.

The goal of the breakfast is to encourage more of a connection with the student-athletes and the faculty/administration/alumni, to support the softball team’s annual spring training trip to Florida, and to “tip-off” the softball season.

Interested supporters can purchase and host a table at the breakfast for $100. Table hosts will serve breakfast to the guests (staff, faculty, alumni, friends) at their respective tables and will be teamed up with a softball player that will assist in serving. The host(ess) of the table that receives the most in tips wins a prize.

Media Workshop Will Show You How To Promote Your News to the Press
(Continued from UNH Today home page.)

Are you interested in learning more about the media relations process and how your campus news can be promoted in the local, regional and national press, as well as to the University community?

The Office of Public Affairs is offering a communications workshop for faculty members in the New Hall Conference Room at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb 20 and 10:00 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22. The sessions run 45 minutes. Refreshments will be served.

As respected members of the community, UNH faculty members are called upon by journalists to share their expertise. In responding to this opportunity, faculty obtain greater public awareness of their achievements and the University’s mission is spotlighted, which boosts its image, and helps with student recruitment and fundraising.

Communicating information successfully requires an understanding of what the media expects from you. This workshop will provide strategies that allow you to share your expertise and respond to journalists in a relaxed and confident manner.

RSVP for your choice of dates by Friday, Feb.15 at jwinkel@newhaven.edu

Training for Employees Aims for a Harassment-Free Workplace
(Continued from UNH Today home page.)

I am writing to you to announce the launch of a new Harassment Prevention Training Program. Similar training has taken place in the past but with limited focus. We have expanded our concentration to include other types of harassment training besides the mandated sexual harassment training.

While portions of this training are mandated by State and Federal law, I believe there is a much more important reason behind it. It is critical to our success as a University in that we stay motivated and focused toward our goals, objectives and our overall strategic plan. A campus environment free of harassment will help facilitate these goals and create a better place to work and learn.

I am requesting that each supervisor that has not gone through the former program to complete the on-line program as soon as possible as there are time requirements in the law. You will receive an email from Workplace Answers with log in details very soon and you will have 90 days to complete the training. This log in is specific to you and cannot be transferred. For those who have gone through the former program, a packet of information on other types of harassment will be sent to you for your review.

I am also requesting that most non-supervisory employees go through an employee version of this training. The employee version takes approximately one hour and the supervisor version takes two hours. You will receive an email from Workplace Answers with log in details very soon and you will have 90 days to complete the training.

In the event on-line training will not work for you or some of your employees, Human Resources will conduct in person sessions periodically throughout the year. In compliance with the laws and regulations, Human Resources will be monitoring attendance.

I am personally committed to striving toward a campus environment free of all types of harassment. Please support this initiative by covering the topic in your next department meeting, taking the course if necessary or reviewing the materials. The University of New Haven embraces the philosophy that all community members should enjoy an environment free of sexual harassment or any other type of harassment. It is the policy of the University to prevent and eliminate harassment. This training is one way we put our words into action.

My best,

Steven H. Kaplan
President
