Nominate a Book for The Common Read
(Continued from UNH Today home page.)
The goals of the Common Reading Program are to create a common academic experience for first year students, and promote discussion that engages the campus community. The Common Read will be required for new students enrolled in the First Year Seminar. Our hope is that faculty, staff and current students will also choose to read the selected book. Programming opportunities will also be developed that relate to the book's themes.
We look forward to receiving your nominations and thank you in advance for your contribution to the 2008 Common Reading Program.

Federal grant will help fund Magnet School
(Continued from UNH Today home page.)
On October 19, I had a meeting with the school superintendents for both New Haven and West Haven, along with other key members working on this initiative. We agreed to form two sub-committees immediately in which UNH will participate. One will be to identify a physical location for the magnet school, while the other will focus on the academic program. It is our goal to have a sixth grade class ready for fall 2008 and phase in an additional class every year after that. I have asked Dean Barry Farbrother to be the UNH point person for this project. He will be working with the other deans to make sure that all of our academic programs are represented in the curriculum development discussions for this new grades 6-12 facility which eventually will be housed adjacent to our campus.
Some faculty members have already asked what the role of the UNH faculty will be in terms of the actual teaching of these students. While this question will need to be answered by our faculty during the planning phase, ideally we will have the more advanced students from the school in some of our introductory courses in science, math, and engineering. I would assume these same students will also be interested in taking introductory courses in the humanities, social sciences, and other areas; but, again, all of this is open for discussion.
During the next few days, Dean Farbrother will be working with the other UNH deans to plan for the initial meeting of the UNH Magnet School Committee. The committee will be composed of UNH administration and faculty representatives plus curriculum supervisors from the New Haven Public School System (Ken Matthews [mathematics] and Richard Therrien [science]). The New Haven Public School System is beginning the task of identifying and hiring other individuals who will be associated with the initiative. The committee has a challenging task ahead of it, if it is to assist with the development of the sixth grade curriculum for the initial class that will enroll in fall 2008. If you are interested in being involved in this initiative, please contact your dean.

Avoid bugs: Wash hands frequently
(Continued from UNH Today home page.)
As many of you know from recent news reports, MRSA, a potentially deadly drug-resistant strain of staph bacteria, has been making its way through schools, gyms and day-care centers.
In addition to the MRSA issue, I want you to know that scabies, an infestation of the skin that results in a rash and severe itching, has also been detected among several students here at the University. Scabies is contracted by prolonged contact with an infested individual. Not casual contact, but prolonged. It spreads through the sharing of towels, clothing and bedding.
Please practice good hygiene. You can easily combat these health threats with a few simple steps.
