Dr. Allen L. Sack will publish Counterfeit Amateurs: An Athlete’s Journey Through the Sixties to the Age of Academic Capitalism with a foreword by famed University of Notre Dame football coach Ara Parseghian. The book examines the evolution of college sports over the past four decades from the vantage point of a former Notre Dame football player, sports activist, and college professor. The book will be published by Penn State Press in February 2008.
Dr. Michael Morris will have a new book, Evaluation Ethics for Best Practice, published in October from Guilford Press. Want to try your hand at a management challenge? Read the link for Dr. Morris’ book and see what you would do in this situation.

To Serve you Better: The Blackboard Server
(Continued from UNH Today home page.)
An e-mail from Alan MacDougall, Director of Academic Computing
I want to take this opportunity to welcome each of you- or welcome you back, as the case may be- to the University of New Haven.
Since the inception of Blackboard at the University of New Haven, we have been on the same server- at least six years. That’s a lot of semesters, courses, and students, not to mention course material, and upgrades to new versions of Blackboard. So we found ourselves running on an older version of Windows, with our processors maxed out and our hard drives packed.
So we have a new blackboard server and we need you to log on. Your Fall 2007 courses will almost certainly be run there. Communities (such as clubs) and other aspects of the current Blackboard will be transferred to the new server over the next month and the old server will officially be decommissioned at the end of the year (31 December).
The new Blackboard server will be using your Active Directory account for log information. This means that once you have reconciled your Blackboard account (see the steps below), you will have one logon username and password which will work across all the systems you regularly log into- Blackboard, UNH Email, Matrix, wireless. This should simplifying your experience using UNH computer resources- and simplify support of those services. Please note that this information supersedes the letters you have received previously. Doubtless over the first few days this process may have a few bumps in the road, but we anticipate a speedy transition and will work to get you in the proper courses. We have asked your instructors to allow you to self-enroll in their courses, a process that will be explained in a follow-up email tomorrow. First we need you to log in and reconcile your Active Directory account with your Blackboard account so the single login mentioned above will work.
Steps to log into the new server and reconcile your account:
1.
2.
A login box will pop up. Type unh\username for the username (example- unh\jsmit1) and your UNH password for the password. Your username can also easily be identified as the part of your UNH email address before @newhaven.edu. Your password is the password that you use to log onto your UNH email, Matrix, and to wireless on campus.
3.
Click on User Login on the next page.
4.
You will see a page asking you to reconcile your account. Use your UNH username as BOTH the username and the password (do not use the unh\, example- use jsmit1 for both username and password). Use all lowercase. This is the only time that you will have to do this. For future logins steps 1-3 will get you logged on. This will create a situation where you will now be able to use the same username/password combination for all your login needs, and we will be adding links inside Blackboard to email, matrix, and other services. You will not be able to login without reconciling your account.
It is important to note that for the time-being, one important feature will be left on http://blackboard.newhaven.edu- depositing to your campus card account (this pertains more to undergraduates but we do have some graduates using the campus card). This will be updated in the near future. At that point, you will receive email instructions you can share with your parents if appropriate on how to do guest deposits. In the meantime that functionality will remain on the old server.
To make the transition less painless, the Blackboard link on the UNH homepage will be switched to allow you to choose the server you wish to logon (see http://www.newhaven.edu/show.asp?durki=2472 for an example).
Please try logging onto the new Blackboard server at your earliest convenience. If you have any problems, please email my Blackboard support email address at mailto:starbuck@newhaven.edu.
