State-of-the-Art Technology: Smart classrooms have been added throughout campus, including the Samuel S. Bergami, Jr., Learning Center for Finance and Technology, which simulates a Wall Street trading-room floor. A student-managed portfolio allows UNH business students to actually buy and sell in the market.
Health Club on Campus: The $15.5 million David A. Beckerman Recreation Center, complete with a glass-enclosed running track, multi-use athletic courts and state-of-the-art exercise machines, opens in December.
The Key to Solving Crimes Under One Roof: Pending funding, UNH’s new signature building will house The Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science, a public museum and learning center, classrooms, laboratories and offices.
Honoring America’s Top Forensic Scientist: The University recently named The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences.
UNH Enters Year of Exploration for Division 1 Status: With an update to its gymnasium, a new artificial turf field and new residence halls to accommodate enrollment growth, UNH is contemplating a shift to a new conference or Division I and bringing back football.
Meeting Adult Student and Corporate Needs: UNH established the University College, which provides programs and courses that focus on academic excellence, convenience, and flexibility. In addition, customized corporate training will be offered to area and regional businesses.
Groundbreaking Faculty Research: NASA (Dr. Nancy Savage – story in summer UNH Alumni Magazine) and PBS/NOVA (Dr. Al Harper and Tim Palmbach – story in summer UNH Alumni Magazine) have called on UNH faculty to develop new technologies and solve mysteries.
A Top Study-Abroad Program: Partnerships have catapulted UNH to one of the largest study-abroad providers in the nation. Agreements were recently signed with Cultural Experiences Abroad (CEA) and The Center for International Studies (CIS).
A Leader in Experiential Learning: Students at UNH put classroom learning to work in exciting real-world settings. UNH is recognized as the Northeast Center for the National Society of Experiential Education (NSEE). The University hosted the first Experiential Education Academy seminars.
Meeting the Need for Engineers Beginning in Middle School: Pending state approval, the University of New Haven Magnet School for Science and Engineering, housed at UNH, will offer enhanced math and science skills to grades 6-12. The first class begins this fall with sixth grade.
Management Skills to Go: UNH’s Hazell Nut Café gives students hands-on experience running a business. The café is named for University alum Jeffery Hazell ’83, who established The Hazell Center for Hospitality Sales and Event Management in 2006.
Enhancing Study Spaces: UNH Library renovations include the Jazzman’s Café, several new group-study rooms, comfortable seating areas, and additional computers.
A Renaissance in Global Security: The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences has created a concentration in International Justice and Security, which will combine Fire Science classes with International Criminal Justice courses and social science studies.
New Major Focuses on Global Connections: Ever-increasing globalization calls for students to recognize the connections and trends between nations and their people. Case studies, language proficiency and international internships equal a well-round graduate.
Corporate Partners in Engineering: The Tagliatela College of Engineering is now offering a B.S. in System Engineering and has established a Corporate Partner program to create closer ties between the University and industry.
Academics and Student Life Go Hand in Hand: UNH’s new F.A.S.T. program (Faculty and Students Together) has faculty interacting with students outside the classroom. And, with the University’s Business Living Learning Community program, Business students live together, interact frequently with Business faculty and staff, and enjoy guest lecturers, off-campus trips and special advising.
The University
The University of New Haven (UNH) is a private, comprehensive university located in West Haven, Connecticut. It was founded in 1920 as the New Haven YMCA Junior College, a division of Northeastern University, and became New Haven College in 1926. In 1970, New Haven College became the University of New Haven, reflecting the increased scope and diversity of the academic programs being offered.

Areas of Study
The University consists of four Colleges: The College of Arts and Sciences, The College of Business, The Tagliatela College of Engineering, and The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences. UNH offers more than 80 undergraduate degree programs and more than 25 graduate degree programs in fields such as sports management, forensic science, music and sound recording, engineering, computer science, fire science, criminal justice, biology, nutrition and dietetics, and dental hygiene.
Students
The University has a full-time undergraduate enrollment of more than 2,400 students, with approximately 65 percent residing on campus, and more than 450 part-time undergraduate students. Graduate School enrollment exceeds 1,700 day and evening students; 944 full-time, 828 part-time. The student-to-faculty ratio is 15:1, and the average class size is 20. The breakdown by gender is approximately 51 percent men and 49 percent women. Our student body hails from 40 different states and 53 foreign countries.

Eighty-two percent of the University’s faculty members hold a Ph.D. or terminal degree in their field.
Athletics
The University of New Haven athletics program is one of the most respected and successful NCAA Division II programs in the country, with teams regularly competing in conference playoff appearances. UNH offers 17 varsity sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, men’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s volleyball.
