If you plan to drive while you are a student, please obtain an international driver's license from your country. You are permitted to use your international driver's license in the U.S. for as long as it is valid.

II. Arrival in U.S.

Will you live in the residence hall?

Will you come to the US before August 24th, the first day of new student check in? 

*Early Arrival means that you will come to the university on August 22nd or 23rd.

*NOTE: This information pertains only to international students who already have a room assignment in a UNH residence hall & are arriving before August 24, 2008, the first day of New Student Welcome Week

If you answered yes to both questions above, please read below CAREFULLY:



First you MUST notify the ISO (International Services Office) of your early arrival date and time by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 8th the latest!!!


-- The earliest you may arrive is Friday, August 24. If you are arriving early, you must notify the ISO of your plans, just call (203) 932-7475 or e-mail the Director, Andrea Hogan ahogan@newhaven.edu
-- You will not be permitted to check in to the residence halls if you have not received the Meningitis vaccination! Make sure you get this before you come!
-- IMPORTANT: Please bring your own bed linens, pillows, toiletries, etc. The office of Residential Life will not provide these items for you

III. Immigration Regulations

B. Working

Strict limitations are placed on the F-1 and J-1 students' eligibility to work. Working without authorization is a deportable offense.

1. F-1 students who are in status may work part-time on campus 20 hours a week while school is in session and full-time during school holidays.
2. An F-1 or J-1 student who meets specified criteria may apply to USCIS for:

  • Practical of academic training: work authorization in the student's field of study.
  • Off-campus work authorization due to unexpected financial need.

It is important to know that any kind of work in the U.S. requires a Social Security card. You can apply for a Social Security card by filling out an application and requesting letters from the International Services Office and from your employer. It may take 2-6 weeks to obtain a Social Security number and card.

IV. SOAR

A. International Student Check List

Checklist Fall 2008
For New Undergraduate International Students

This list will help make your first few days on campus much easier. Just follow the list and if you have done everything you have made a very successful start to an exciting new adventure!
  • For those who have made a reservation in advance, you may check into the residence Halls on August 26. If you have not made reservations in advance, you must make your own housing arrangements.
  • Bring your Passport and Forms I-20 and I-94 to the International Services Office located in Bartels Hall, the campus center.
  • Present your completed measles and immunization form and our Health Examination Report to the Health Services Office.
  • Pay tuition and fees at the Bursar's Office
  • Attend the WelcomeWeek Activitiesbeginning on August 24.
  • Classes begin on August 27.

B. Registration for international students

Testing and registration for students arriving in August will take place on Monday, August 25, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. Registration will take place in the afternoon.

C. Orientation meetings and activities

A special orientation meeting for new international undergraduate students will take place on Monday, August 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Upper Lounge of Bartels Hall. Come meet members of the International Student Association, learn about your immigration responsibilities, and get to know other students. This program is mandatory for new international students.
