The University of New Haven (UNH) Theatre Program will present a fall 2009 production of “The Pillowman.” Written by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, “The Pillowman” was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 2005 and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2003. The UNH cast includes Robert Ceriello ’10, Benjamin Hollies ’11, Shana Clore ’12, James Zap ’13, Kyle Melnick ’13, Michael Crocker ’13, Katelyn Noyes ’13, Cindy Raymond ’13, Samantha Prusski ’11, Sara Maguire ’10, Alyssa Biggs ’10, graduate student Anthony Forgette and director of the UNH Theatre Program Robert Boles.

“The Pillowman” centers on Katurian, a fiction writer living in an unnamed totalitarian state who is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders occurring in his town. When Katurian hears that his disturbed, younger brother Michal has confessed to the murders and blames Katurian, he resigns himself to his execution but attempts to save his stories from destruction.
“The Pillowman” will be guest directed by Dave McRee, theatre professor at SarahLawrence College. The set for the production was designed by Jessica Emerson ’10, winner of the 2008 Kennedy Center Award for Scenic Design. Vladimir Shpitalnik, UNH theatre program adjunct, will serve as set-design consultant. Angelina Avellone, who is currently involved in the Broadway production “Bye Bye Birdie” and the upcoming Broadway musical “The Addams Family,” will be a consultant for special effects. Bryan Steele, UNH theatre program adjunct will serve as the fight choreographer.
