The Friends of the UNH Library will host a public lecture entitled: "A Failure to Communicate: Historical Rhetoric and Diplomacy in U.S. - China Relations," with Brett McCormick, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of the UNH Global Studies Program. McCormick will discuss how historical rhetoric is becoming an impediment to effective diplomacy between the U.S. and China, and will present a condensed version of the appeal he made to attendees at the 2009 East Asia Security Symposium to filter out historical references and rhetoric from future diplomatic works. This event is free and open to the public.

Details:

McCormick received his B.A. from Stony Brook University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Cornell University. He is an assistant professor in the Department of History at UNH, where he teaches courses in western civilization, history methods, global studies and on the histories of China, Japan and Korea. Since 2003, McCormick has organized and participated in a week-long diplomacy and security affairs conference hosted at the China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) in Beijing. UNH has been a conference sponsor since 2008, and the conference was recently renamed the UNH-CFAU East Asia Security Symposium and Conference. Attendees regularly include high-ranking military officials, diplomats and scholars from more than a dozen countries. McCormick’s research interests include East Asian international relations, diplomacy and security affairs.
