Holocaust Survivor Dr. Leon Chameides Featured Speaker at UNH Holocaust Remembrance Event

West Haven, Conn., April 2, 2007 - The University of New Haven (UNH) is sponsoring its fourth annual Holocaust Remembrance Event with keynote speaker Dr. Leon Chameides, a respected Hartford area cardiologist who is a Holocaust survivor, on Thursday, April 12, at 3 p.m. in the Marvin K. Peterson Library on the UNH campus and is open to the public. 

In addition to remarks by Chameides, a program of remembrance will include the reading of names of persons who perished in the Holocaust and who have a relationship with a member of the UNH community. The ceremony will include the lighting of ceremonial candles, the chanting of a memorial blessing, a moment of silent contemplation and musical accompaniment.

Chameides and his brother were the only survivors of the Holocaust in his immediate family. He was born in Poland, obtained his early education in Russia, Poland and England and came to the United States in 1949. He has been active in the Jewish community, serving as chair of the Commission of Jewish Education, chair of the Jewish Historical Society, president of Congregation Agudas Achim and as a member of several boards and task forces. The founding chair of Pediatric Cardiology at Hartford Hospital, he served in that capacity for 30 years and as chair of Pediatrics for 10 years. He also served as Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University Of Connecticut School Of Medicine. He holds a B.S. degree from Yeshiva College, a Hebrew teacher's diploma from the Teacher's Institute of Yeshiva University and an M.D. degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
