West Haven, Conn., April 19, 2007 - On Friday, April 20, between 9 and 11:30 a.m., 32 middle school students from Bridgeport and Stratford will each launch a rocket they've made during a special week-long engineering session at the University of New Haven. The students received an introduction to aerospace engineering and learned some of the basic principals of flight thanks to Project Lead The Way Inc. (PLTW) which the students' teachers attended last summer.
PLTW is a national program forming partnerships between public schools, higher education institutions and the private sector to increase the quantity and quality of engineers and engineering technologists graduating from our education system. University of New Haven is the affiliate university for PLTW, providing teacher training, PLTW certification for CT schools, college credit for students, graduate college credit and professional development for teachers.
The program offers a hands-on, project-based approach to learning that better prepares students for the rigors of college, and incorporates math, science, English, and technology skills needed for success. Currently PLTW is offered in 60 schools in Connecticut and over 45 states and the District of Columbia.
