Professor and Chair Receives Donald E. Cummings Memorial Award from American Industrial Hygiene Association

West Haven, Conn., June 29, 2007- University of New Haven (UNH) Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Occupational Safety and Health Management Department, Howard Cohen, was recently awarded the 2007 Donald E. Cummings Memorial Award by the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) during the annual AIHA Conference and Exposition (AIHCE) in Philadelphia.

Cohen received his award for exceptional accomplishments and significant contributions to the industrial hygiene and occupational and environmental health and safety profession. The Cummings award is among the most prestigious awards usually given to an experienced and seasoned professional for outstanding contributions to the field of industrial hygiene.

Cohen recently served as a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Review Committee, which is evaluating the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health efforts to update the criteria used for anthropometric sizing for respirator selection. He is also a member of the IOM committee developing guidelines for respiratory protection against avian flu.

Cohen received his M.P.H. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.  He has over 20 peer reviewed publications in the field of industrial hygiene, five of which have received awards for the most outstanding publications in their fields. Cohen has spent 25 years as a member of various editorial review boards of journals. He is a member of two National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine committees involving personal protective equipment, one of which is focused on protecting healthcare workers from pandemic influenza.  He is currently researching diesel exhaust exposures of trainmen on behalf of the American Association of Railroads and performing a retrospective exposure assessment of asbestos exposures of automobile mechanics who performed clutch services.
