Inspring Young Girls to Pursue Science Careers

Article Body
West Haven, Conn., July 25, 2007 - Encouragement from her high-school chemistry teacher and winning a "Golden Test Tube Award" led University of New Haven (UNH) Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Dr. Nancy Savage down her career path. Now Savage hopes to interest middle- and high-school girls in the New Haven area in engineering through UNH's new Engineering and Science Summer Institute for Young Women.

According to Savage, there are far fewer women than men in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. "Women bring different skill sets to any ‘non-traditional' field," she points out. "Science and engineering disciplines need women, with their experiences, interests and ideas, to help bring about future discoveries and innovations."

Open to young women aged 10 to 15 who rank in the top half of their class, the one-week overnight program, which runs July 29 through August  2, will be taught by UNH professors. Hands-on projects will include Who Dunnit? DNA Electrophoresis Identifies the Criminal, The Chemistry of Food, Building Bridges, Code Robotics, Simple Circuits and Physics of Sound.

A leader in experiential learning, the University of New Haven provides its students with a unique combination of solid liberal arts and real-world, hands-on professional training. A private University founded in 1920, UNH has a full-time undergraduate enrollment of more than 2,400 students-with 70 percent residing on its 80-acre main campus-and a graduate school enrollment that exceeds 1,700. The University offers more than 80 undergraduate degrees and more than 25 graduate degrees through its four colleges, in fields such as sports management, nutrition and dietetics, forensic science, music and sound recording, engineering, computer science, fire science and criminal justice. University of New Haven students study abroad through a variety of distinctive programs.
