Reference & Circulating Materials
Government Publications & Resources
Writing & Citing
The Marvin K. Peterson Library's resources in dental hygiene include print materials as well as electronic periodicals, periodical indexes, and research databases. This guide presents a selection of resources, both ours and the Internet sources we list. Use our catalog to find more resources and search the Internet carefully and critically for additional websites. Some of our other library guides, like Biology and Chemistry may also be helpful to dental hygiene students. For a good overview of library research and resources, take the Virtual Reference Tour. For research assistance, visit us at the Information Desk, call us at 203-932-7189, or e-mail us.
Please note: This online guide contains direct links to databases and websites. To locate any of the sites listed if you have printed out this guide, simply type in the name of the organization in Google or another search engine to find the site.
Go to the Peterson Library home page at www.newhaven.edu/library and take a
few minutes to familiarize yourself with it. If you start at the UNH website at http://www.newhaven.edu/, click on Library in the top middle. All the links for accessing library materials and services are on the left on the library home page. The most important are the ones for the Catalog, Databases, Journals, and library Guides,
but a quick look at all will be time well spent.
Use the library catalog to find circulating and reference materials, including books, audio-visual holdings, government documents, and periodical titles. For periodical articles, see the Journals section. Our catalog uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system and subject headings. LC assigns call numbers (letters and numbers) according to the book's primary subject. Most books about dental topics will be in the R section where medicine is covered.
Quick search tips:
♦ Truncate with "?": periodon? will get periodontal, periodontics, etc.
♦ Put phrases in " ": "dental assistants" or "oral hygiene"
♦ Sort by Publish date descending to get newest items at the top of the list.
♦ Click on the Bibliographic tab to get the LC subject headings for an item
and then click on them to links to additional material on the same subject.
♦ Always click on the Linked Resources tab to check for electronic access.
The URL box on the right in multi-item searches is also a tip-off.
For additional search tips, consult the library guide on Using the UNH Library Catalog (OPAC) or take our interactive Online Library Catalog Tutorial.
If you can't find something in our catalog, please use our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. Forms to request books and articles are available at the Information Desk, and online from the library's website. Fill a request form for each item. Incomplete or inaccurate information will delay receipt of material so please be accurate.
Some Reference and Circulating Books

The Marvin K. Peterson Library has been a Federal Depository Library since 1971 and currently receives about a third of Government Printing Office (GPO) publications.
While many documents still come in physical formats (paper, microfiche, CD-ROM), electronic versions are increasingly common. All currently received documents, and many of the older ones, will be found through library catalog searches. Look for the URL symbol or click on Linked Resources to check for the online availability of a particular item. For catalog items with the U.S. Gov't Docs location that are not online, come to the Information Desk for staff assistance.
Periodical articles from magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals are a valuable source of information in all research fields. The Journals link on the home page is a listing of most of the periodical titles, current and historical, to which you have access through the library. Formats of journals include print, microform, and electronic. Use the Journals link to find:
♦ Single journals or articles: If you have the citation to an article, type the title of the journal into the top search box. Results will show which databases contain the journal electronically and give you a list of available issues to search through. Available UNH library holdings are also given to enable you to find and/or copy the article in the library. Current and older issues of most of our print periodicals are on the lower level. Ask for current newspapers and microform assistance at the Circulation Desk.
♦ Lists of journals by keyword or subject: Use the top search option, with the drop-down box set to ‘Title contains all words' and search with title keywords (e.g., dental, hygi*, etc. [*= truncation here]). You can also use the lower drop-down search box and select subjects like Health & Biological Sciences and the listed subcategories that include Dentistry. This method allows you to identify periodicals in a field and browse current issues of these periodicals, either online or in the library.
♦ If you need a list of articles on a subject, use the journal indexes found in this guide in the next section on Databases. For more on searching for periodical articles, consult our library guide on Finding Articles.
Here is a hyperlinked list of dental journals for easy access and online browsing:
Advances in Dental Research; American Dental Association News; Annals of Periodontology; Brazilian Dental Journal; CRA (Clinical Research Associates) Newsletter; Compendium of Continuing Education In Dentistry; Dental Abstracts; Dental Angle; Dental Assistant; Dental Implantology Update; Dental Lab Products; Dental Products Report; Dental Products Report Europe; International Poster Journal of Dentistry and Oral Medicine; Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice; Journal of Dental Education; Journal of Dental Hygiene; Journal of Dental Research; Journal of Periodontology; Journal of Practical Hygiene; Journal of Public Health Dentistry; Journal of the American Dental Association; New York State Dental Journal; Practical Procedures and Aesthetic Dentistry
Access all our electronic resources through the Databases link on the library home page and enter your UNH 16-digit ID number on the proxy screen when requested. Choose from the alphabetical list of database names, an annotated list which describes the databases, and the subject listing which groups them by topical area. The links below will take you to ones here useful for dentistry and dental hygiene.
Many of our databases are electronic journal indexes and, whether your subject is a medical field, a product, a brand, or an industry, the most efficient way to find articles by subject is to use an index that searches the contents of many journals at one time. Increasingly, many provide the full text of the article as well as the citation and abstract. In addition, our journal-linking service will frequently offer you ‘Find full text' links to other databases and tell you the availability of periodicals in the library. For tips on getting the most out of the databases listed below, take our interactive Database Searching Tutorial.

There is much valuable information on the Internet but caution must be exercised as with any material you use. Generally, it is best to stay with .edu or .gov domains. These are educational institutions and government agencies. The .com web sites are primarily commercial in nature. A .org site may just as easily be a respected professional organization or a biased opinion group. Look for the ‘About us' link and examine all sites for accuracy, objectivity, the authoritativeness of the sources they cite, the currency of the data, and the extent of the coverage. The following are some reliable websites in the field of dentistry and dental hygiene:
The Career Services Center in Kaplan 210 offers assistance with the job search process and résumés.
Another good place to look for online job postings is the website of a large public library. Most provide a job search center, and their job search web pages provide links to local job listings, résumé assistance and more. The New Haven Free Public Library has a useful collection of job-related links.
The Occupational Outlook Handbook from the Bureau of Labor Statistics has a section on dental hygienists, including training, licensing requirements, job outlook, employment and other professional links. There are descriptions of other jobs in the dental field as well.
Writing the Paper and Citing Your Research
The library has created Style Guides to citing your sources according to several styles. The Style Sheet for Research Papers includes a section on science citation systems. Search our catalog for handbooks and manuals on the research and writing process using writing and handbooks as keywords. In addition, the staff of the Center for Learning Resources (Maxcy Hall, Rooms 106-110) assists students writing papers.
This and other guides are available online from our home page. Look for the Library Guides link.
