Study Abroad with Center for International Studies
Students who travel with CIS should attend an information session sponsored by the Study Abroad office. Please contact the Study Abroad office for more information, or visit the CIS Study Abroad website!
Internal Process for UNH students studying on CIS Semester Abroad Programs
- Completed application submitted to Study Abroad in the Experiential Education Office.
- Study Abroad confirms that student (a) meets academic requirement; (b) has no "judicial" record that would prevent him/her from studying abroad; (c) has no financial hold on account.
- Completed packet (application form, course selection form, recommendation form, personal statement and transcript) is submitted to CIS for processing. The application fee is waived for UNH students.
- CIS will send out acceptance packets to student as they arrive from the host institution AND a notification to UNH Study Abroad.
- Student is expected to return acceptance of offer form and other essential documents (agreement and release, financial aid documentation, etc.) within 2 weeks, to CIS along with a non-refundable program deposit (generally $500.00) and a refundable housing damage deposit (ranges from $150-$700 depending upon program.)
- The Student submits a deposit check to CIS and submits it directly along with their acceptance paperwork. The program deposit will be deducted from the total amount that the student is billed. The housing deposit is refundable after the program ends, less any damages, so there is no need to account for this in the billing process.
- Once student "deposits", CIS will notify the following offices at UNH: Experiential Education (Study Abroad et al), Financial Aid, Registrar and Bursar. The following will happen with each notification:
- After notification, CIS will begin to work directly with the student to prepare them for their semester abroad. This will include housing placement, assistance with air transportation plans, confirming course selection with host university, assisting with visa requirements, arrangement for airport meeting service, arranging student medical and accident insurance, etc.
- Prior to departure, CIS will arrange for a group predeparture orientation to take place at UNH. We'll customize a program that is both general in nature as well as specific to address the varying program locations. Students will be required to attend. Parents are also welcome to attend this meeting.
- Students are expected to keep up with their UNH email. Registration for the following semester will most likely occur while you are studying away. You will want to prepare in advance of leaving for the semester you will return.
