(11-03-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - University of New Haven head women's volleyball coach Robin Salters has been named a 2009 Connecticut Women's Volleyball Hall of Fame honoree. Salters will be inducted at the Hall of Fame Ceremony on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 as a college player.
A 1991 UNH graduate, Salters transferred to UNH in 1989 and was the Chargers' starting setter in 1989 and 1990. During her playing career at UNH, she earned All-Region honors and was named the school's Female Athlete of the Year for the 1990-91 academic year. She concluded her career by winning the University's NCAA Woman of the Year Award in 1991.
Salters ranks seventh in the UNH record books with 1,884 career assists, including a ninth-best 1,358 assists in 1990. In 1990 she also led the team with 70 service aces.
In 1994 Salters opened her coaching career at UNH by taking the Chargers to ten straight NCAA Tournaments from 1994 to 2003, including six berths in the NCAA Elite Eight and six conference championships.
Salters joins three fellow Chargers in the Connecticut Women's Volleyball Hall of Fame. New Haven's Director of Athletics, Deborah Chin and New Haven Athletics Hall of Fame member Saundra Lautz were members of the first induction class in 1998. Another UNH Athletics Hall of Fame member, Marcia McNeil-Major was also enshrined as a member of the class of 2001.
The Connecticut Women's Volleyball Hall of Fame seeks to honor those who, in a superlative fashion, have contributed to the enhancement of women's volleyball in Connecticut through participation, service, support, or achievement. Perfection, achievement, effort and dedication reflect the lives and careers of the Connecticut Women's Volleyball Hall of Fame inductees.
Other inductees this year include Brittany Dickinson (High School Player), Holly Ismail (High School Player), Gail Ericson (High School Coach), Mary Ellen Vaccari (High School Coach) and Val Dickinson (Official).
