CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – Seven student-athletes have been named as recipients of the East Coast Conference Winter and Spring 2008 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports. The awards are based on academic and athletic merit and voted on by each sport's head coaches throughout the conference.
Along with the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winners, the ECC also announced the spring scholar-athlete honor roll, comprised of nominees for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
University of New Haven honorees on the Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll were Lauren Hood (women's basketball), Brigid Brady (women's lacrosse), Chad Lemos (baseball), and Jordanna Borska (softball).
Those four join six UNH honorees from the fall season, including women's cross country Scholar-Athlete of the Year Alissa von Schmidt and Honor Roll recipients James Beaubrun (men's cross country), Jason Zurita (men's soccer), Amy Desmarais (women's soccer), Leah Smith (women's tennis) and Rhe-Ann Niles (women's volleyball).
2008 ECC Winter and Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners were Chanz Wellington of Mercy (men's basketball), E.J. Dreyer of Molloy (women's basketball), Jose Gomez of Dowling and Zeki Tukel of Mercy (men's tennis), Chris Caputo of Dowling (baseball), Dely Francisco of Adelphi (softball), Ryan Campbell of Dowling (men's lacrosse), and Elaine Williams of C.W. Post (women's lacrosse).
