COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The University of New Haven was one of 26 institutions nationwide selected to receive a 2007-08 Diversity in Athletics Award, as announced by the NCAA and the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport.  UNH was one of just 14 NCAA Division II members selected to receive the top award, presented in the category of Overall Excellence in Diversity.

The 2007-08 winners of the Overall Excellence in Diversity award will be recognized in conjunction with the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program graduation ceremony on June 11 during the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) convention in Dallas.

In addition to receiving the award for Overall Excellence in Diversity, UNH was also recognized in the categories of "Value and Attitudinal Diversity" of department employees, and "Gender Diversity" of department employees.

"This award is something that we should all be proud of here at the University of New Haven, not just as employees of the Department of Athletics but as an institution overall," said Director of Athletics Deborah Chin.  "Our university prides itself on being inclusive, and as a department we have stressed diversity, equity, tolerance and fairness.  One of the six attributes of NCAA Division II is 'Balance,' and I think our staff represents that word extremely well."

Through the independent research conducted by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University and supported by the NCAA, athletics departments are recognized in eight categories:
1. overall excellence in diversity;
2. diversity strategy;
3. gender diversity of department employees;
4. racial diversity of department employees;
5. value and attitudinal (values, attitudes, and personality) diversity of department employees;
6. graduation of African-American female student-athletes;
7. graduation of African-American male student-athletes;
8. gender equity compliance (substantial proportionality).
