PRINCETON, N.J. -- Sophomore Shannon Gagne represented the University of New Haven women's outdoor track and field team in the ECAC Track and Field Championships this weekend. Gagne qualified for the meet in both the 200-meter dash and long jump. The Meriden, Connecticut unfortunately did not qualify for the upcoming national meet with 11th and 21st place finishes over the weekend.
In the 200-meter dash, Gagne (photo) ran in the second of six preliminary heats on the day. Her time of 24.33 seconds put her in 11th place out of thirty-three competitors, just 0.18 seconds out of a berth in the finals which were won by Murielle Ahoure of George Mason University.
Gagne posted a 21st place finish in the long jump. Her mark of 5.50 meters was behind a vast number of Division I teams which were being represented at the meet. The winning mark was posted by Jeomi Maduka of Cornell with a jump of 6.51 meters.
Earlier in the season Gagne had provisionally qualified for the NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Track Championships in the long jump. She had also provisionally qualified for the long jump in the indoor portion of the season. But as the field was announced on Monday for the outdoor championships, Gagne learned she would not be competing at the event being held in Walnut, California next weekend.
