BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- A pair of solo home runs and a complete game one-hit shutout from sophomore Breanne Gleason carried the eighth-seeded University of New Haven softball team to a 2-0 victory over No. 5 Georgian Court on Thursday. With the win, the Chargers advance in the consolation bracket of the NCAA Northeast Regional to face Bryant University at 9:00 a.m. on Friday.
In her complete game one-hit shutout of the Lions, Gleason fell only two outs short of tossing a no-hitter. After retirning the first batter of the seventh on a nice play by second baseman Courtney Garland, Gleason gave up walk and then a long single off the center field fence to see her no-hitter go by the way. But she was able to get out of the inning with a pair of outs, helping UNH (26-20) to move into the next round. Gleason tied her season high with 12 strikeouts in the victory.
The Charger offense was led by solo home runs from Garland (second inning) and Jessica Medina (third inning). Those two runs would be more than enough behind a dominant pitching performance from Gleason. The Bristol, Connecticut native rebounded from her outing yesterday versus top-seeded No. 9 C.W. Post in which she allowed eight runs in only 1 2/3 innings of work.
UNH's Friday opponent, No. 6 Bryant, won its opening-round game over No. 3 Adelphi but lost to No. 2 Le Moyne on Thursday, 9-1 in six innings. The loser of the UNH-Bryant game on Friday will be eliminated from the Regional, while the winner will advance to face the winner of the No. 3 Adelphi vs. No. 4 Caldwell game.
