English Language Requirement (TOEFL)

All non-native English language speakers must demonstrate English language competency by providing an IELTS score of 5.5 OR a TOEFL score of 520 on the paper based test (PBT)/ 190 on the computer based test (CBT)/70 on the internet based test (iBT). The University of New Haven School Code for TOEFL is 3663.

All graduate students seeking a master's degree whose iBT TOEFL scores range from 70 to 79 (or range from 190 to 213 CBT or range from 520 to 550 PBT) will be required to take an English language leveling course (E600) in their first term along with their other regular courses. In other words, if your iBT TOEFL score equals 70 or above, but is below 80, you then must take E600 in your first term along with other regular courses.  Graduate students with IELTS scores that equal 5.5 but below 6.0, will also be required to take E600. For example, an applicant who has an iBT TOEFL score of 79 or an IELTS score of 5.5, would still be required to take the E600 course during his/her first term at UNH.

Important Note: UNH will offer conditional acceptance to those who are academically admissible but who need to improve their English language abilities before beginning academic course work. This means that if you have no TOEFL or IELTS scores or a low TOEFL or IELTS score, you can still apply to the undergraduate or graduate degree program of your choice at UNH. If the Admissions Committee determines that your application meets all the requirements for admission except for the English language requirement, you will be granted "Conditional Acceptance".
Conditional Acceptance provides you with the assurance that once you have met the English language requirement for admission into a degree program, you will be allowed to begin your academic course work at UNH.
